Envoy asks Pakistani students to avail Russian scholarships

KARACHI: The Consul General of Russian Federation to Karachi, Oleg N Avdeev has invited local students to take advantage of educational scholarships offered to them by his country.

Addressing the teaching faculty and students of Sindh Madressatul Islam here on Thursday, he regretted that lack of awareness among students in Pakistan about these free education opportunities in Russian has hindered many of the youngsters to avail the opportunity. He said the scholarships are part of his country’s attempt to promote cordial relations, on people to people basis, between Russia and Pakistan. Suggesting need to develop cooperation in the field of education between the two country, the CG said collaboration can be initiated between educational institutions of Pakistan and Russia with focus on exchange of faculty and students besides promoting research in relevant fields.

Oleg N Avdeev said tremendous opportunities also exist for Pakistanis in the fields of trade and commerce, medicine as well as information technology at the Russian Federation. Consul General of the Russian Federation said the two countries were enjoying close bilateral relations manifested through series of joint projects including a pipeline from Karachi to Lahore, besides power plants, one each in Guddu (Sindh) and Muzaffargarh (Punjab) respectively. He said Russia was also assisting Pakistan in gas and oil exploration and that visits of dignitaries from Pakistan and also that of business community, to Russia, has helped bringing the two countries closer to one another.

We also hold similar views on varied international issues enabling us to come all the more closer to one another, said the consul general of Russian Federation. SMIU Vice Chancellor, Dr Muhammad Ali Shaikh in his welcome address said friendly relations between the two countries spread over decades and it was only Russia (former Soviet Union) that initiated transfer of technology to Pakistan in 1970s and assisted inestablishment of Steel Mills in Karachi. He agreed that there was need to promoted cooperation in the field of education and research between the two countries.
