With respect to the International Literacy Day, annually commemorated on September 8, the Rotary Club on Monday announced to observe a ‘Literacy Week’, starting September 1.

Addressing a press conference, Rotary District Governor Jahangir Moghul informed the ‘Rotary’s Total Literacy Mission, would hold activities through the club’s TEACH programme.

Tree plantation drives, health and hygiene camps in various schools whereas a teachers development programme would be organised besides a literacy walk would also be held on September 6.

The literacy week would culminate with a district level programme on September 8 and 20, respectively.

“Our target is to focus on government schools and institutions bringing about a quantitative improvement in the education sector,” Moghul said.

After Rotary International’s successful ‘End Polio’ campaign, the results motivated the Rotarians in South Asia to adopt the literacy mission, Moghul claimed.

He claimed that an MOU in this regard had been signed with the Sindh government, secretary education, chairperson Sindh Education Foundation and director Schools Karachi to adopt 88 schools, whereas 300 schools would be taken over by the Rotary Club.

He was accompanied with chairman Corporate and International Funding Committee Anis H Younus, Rotary district assistant governor Farooq Dadi, chairman Rotary Literacy Mission Mohammed Faiz Kidwai.
