‘Reading English makes a child perfect’

ISLAMABAD: The Punjab government changes its own education policy by changing the medium of education from English to Urdu for classes up to grade 3.
Parents complained that the conversion of language from English to Urdu would create inferiority complex among the students of government schools.
The Punjab government has launched “Parho Punjab Barho Punjab” programme. Under this programme, the curricula of studies have changed to Urdu from English. Now, the students of nursery to grade 3 would receive education in Urdu. New books of science and mathematics in Urdu have already been provided in the schools.
Earlier, the Punjab government had converted the medium of education from Urdu to English in 2009. After adoption of English as medium, education departments faced several issues including untrained teachers. The government spent around six years on this medium of education and a huge amount of resources were spent on teachers training.
Now the government has revised its policy and changed the medium of education.
Parents told Daily Times that English is an international language and students should be provided education in English from the beginning to compete in future.
Sources disclosed that after the change of medium, the number of students in government schools has been reduced. In some areas, senior education officials, unofficially ordered school administrations to run both systems at the same time to maintain the strength of students.
Punjab Assembly Member and Punjab Education Foundation Chairman Qamarul Islam Raja said, “This step has taken to improve learning outcomes of the students because it has been observed that students of junior classes feel difficulties to pick up the lesson in English language.”
Private schools are following English as medium of education because they have trained teaching staff but unfortunately we don’t have the staff of said qualification, Raja said.
