1 | Genetics is the science that deals with heredity and variation. Characteristics inherited from patents are hereditary traits. These are transmitted from parents to offspring through chromosomes and genes. Each human sex cell nucleus has 23 minute bodies called chromosomes. At the time of fertilization, 23 female chromosomes combine with 23 male chromosomes and form 23 pairs (46) of chromosomes. With the exception of one, all other maternal chromosomes are complemented with a similar-shaped paternal chromosomes. If the 23rd paternal chromosome is similar to the 23rd maternal chromosome the offspring will be female, otherwise male. It is father’s chromosomes that determine the sex of the child. Genes - These are small units in each chromosome. They determine the characteristics of an organism. Genes consist of RNA and DNA molecules. Gene - type is the genetic make-up of an individual. Phenotype are the physical characteristics of an individual. |
