Bridging the gap: Lincoln Corner opens in Lahore

LAHORE: A stylish lounge with a seating capacity of over 50 people has been established to engage Pakistan’s youth in science, arts and culture with the youth in the United States.

Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif inaugurated the ‘Lincoln Corner’ on Friday at the second floor of Arfa Kareem Tower.

The United States Consulate, Lahore and Information Technology University (ITU) established the centre to bridge gap between both communities and help Pakistanis to understand the American culture.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony, US Consul General in Lahore Yuri Fedkiw said Lincoln Corner wanted to increase its cooperation with Pakistan in education and technology sectors.

Lincoln Corner hosts different dialogues and discussions on diverse issues of Pakistan. The corner, which is 19th in Pakistan and the first in Lahore, will also train educated women to learn computers and allow them to work on projects for the private sector.

This will provide them a safe venue to earn livelihood for their families. The corner also has a mini library of 500 books. Punjab Information Technology Board, Chairman Dr Umer Saif told The Express Tribune this corner has a diverse usage. He said this corner would treat post-trauma patients and host counseling sessions for them.

He said this was the free space to discuss and learn in a healthy and a safe environment.

Addressing the ceremony, CM Shehbaz said the corner would help Pakistani students learn English and understand US education system. He said it would benefit the youth by providing them with free facility of internet, books and magazines. “This corner will increase dialogue between Americans and Pakistani students, helping them to understand each other’s culture in a better way.”

He was of the view that such initiative would bring both societies closer and increase avenues for jobs. Shehbaz vowed to work on different project to bring both countries closer, keeping a close liaison with newly-elected US president Donald Trump.

There are over 700 Lincoln Corners around the world. This corner is scheduled to hold regular sessions of English language classes, market space activities, education advisory, cultural programmes, and US alumni engagements.
