471 fellowships, 106 memberships conferred at CPSP convocation

KARACHI - As many as 471 fellowships and 106 memberships were conferred on successful candidates at 50th convocation of College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) yesterday.

Rashid Lateef Gold Medal was awarded to Dr Mehreen Khaleel Qureshi in Obstetrics and Gyanaecology.
Prof Adeebul Hasan Rizvi, known academician and CEO of SIUT was the chief guest at the convocation.

Addressing the participants, Prof Rizvi urged the fellows and members to deal the ailing humanity with love, care and respect.
“You have another obligation of updating knowledge.
I am learning laparoscopic surgery from one of my juniors sitting right amongst you.
It is never too late to learn”, he said.

In his welcome address, Prof Zafarullah Chaudhry, President CPSP said that the institute greatly values institutions like SIUT, which render services towards patient care as well as for postgraduate medical education.
SIUT is one of the CPSP partners in postgraduate medical education as it trains specialists in 15 CPSP fellowship programmes, he said.

He congratulated the successful specialists and their families for achieving the highest degree of clinical sciences in Pakistan.
As a note of advice he reminded them of nation’s expectations, which require greater investment of efforts keeping themselves current and competent in order to serve the people with their utmost abilities and dedication, he added.

CPSP, he added, has produced till 2015 around 17,400 fellows and 8396 members, which constitute about 95 per cent of specialist medical manpower of the country.
“CPSP has a policy of seeking collaboration of stakeholders within the country, in the region and all over the globe.

The key players of CPSP educational programmes are its residents, who after graduation become fellows and with the acquisition of experience and capacity building; attain the status of supervisers, examiners and members of specialist faculties” he said.

College, he described, has constituted 46 specialist faculties comprising subject specialists drawn from all parts of the country, who advise the council on academic matters such as curriculum, criteria for accreditation and supervisers and examination framework.

The academic frameworks and Innovations College developed during last few years include defining of essential components of CPSP Star Residency programme and aligning them with each other to bring improvements in the product, he stated.

This network includes residents in 73 fellowship and 22 membership programmes to reach all stakeholders, he added.

He further said that the college has developed 12 Regional Centers across the country which provide maximum administrative, educational and research facilities near the training sites.

These regional centers are also video linked for more frequent educational activities, faculty meetings, conferences, seminars and administrative consultations, he said.

He said that the CPSP presented a concept of temporary external migration at the platform of WHO in 2013 in Brazil alongwith HSE of Ireland which takes care to prevent brain drain.

CPSP and HSE were awarded Best International prize for this innovative joint venture, he said.

This scheme has allows residents to work at better equipped and CPSP accredited hospitals of Ireland for a fixed period and continue their training according to prescribed curriculum, return to the country and appear in examination, he said.
