PRC launches women’s forum to expand outreach

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Red Crescent (PRC) has announced to launch women forum to advance the mission of the organisation through women locally, nationally and internationally.

PRC women forum will serve as a platform for members to participate in awareness drives on health, education and empowerment of women, says Dr Saeed Elahi, the chairman of Pakistan Red Crescent. Being the leading humanitarian organisation in the country, the PRC has been striving to alleviate sufferings of the vulnerable people. To further reinforce its variety of public welfare services, the PRC has made another landmark addition to its ambit by launching the forum.

“It will be a vibrant comity of women striving to advance the PRC mission through a focused investment of time, talent and treasure by engaging women locally, nationally and internationally,” he said.

“The forum will promote women’s reproductive health rights; strive for women’s economic empowerment; address women’s vulnerability in disasters; address gender bias and discrimination; support women’s inter-, intra-organisational activities for effective communication and networking; provide a platform for integrated efforts on women causes; liaise with government on women-related legislation; educate on road and school safety and disaster management and develop and enhance women resources and capacity,” the chairman said.

The forum members will be given foreign and domestic trainings, stress management and traumas counseling, walk-a-cause and excursion trips, carnivals, fun fares, mushairas and musical evenings, cooking classes and vocational training and awareness sessions on education and health.

The National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) member Fazila Alyani speaking to the launching ceremony said the forum will serve the purpose to focus on special measures for gender justice, diversity, and equality, and women’s and girls’ empowerment, especially those living in remote, underdeveloped, environmentally challenged or disaster prone areas.

“For many women, disasters, natural or man- made, are a permanent feature of their lives. This is the segment of society for which the PRC is no less than the light at the end of the tunnel as now many women like me have got a platform to share their issues,” she said.
