KP plans to set up model institute for street children

PESHAWAR - To develop a comprehensive social protection system especially for women, poor and the most vulnerable segments of the society, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government is planning to establish a 'model institute for street children' this year, officials said on Wednesday.
"The institute will be established at Nasapa Payan Flats on Charssadda Road, which will be known in Pashto as Zamung Kor (Our Home)," they said.
They said the PTI-led had allocated huge funds for this purpose in the proposed development plan as the department included schemes for the wellbeing and safeguarding of destitute women, orphans, beggars, drug addicts and special persons.
The KP government has appointed Reham Khan, wife of PTI Chief Imran Khan, as ambassador for street children. In this regard, on April 12 last, Adviser to Chief Minister Dr Mehr Taj Roghani had announced Reham Khan as ambassador of provincial government for raising awareness about the rights of street children.
The provincial government has planned to impart technical education and regular education to the street children. Officials said that a survey would be conducted in three districts of the province, including Peshawar, Mardan and Abbottabad to ascertain the number of street children. "Establishing model institute for street children will be considered an achievement of the provincial government once work on it is properly started," officials added.
They said for this purpose, the KP government has allocated Rs523 million for a total of 26 projects, which included model institute for street children, construction of Special Education Centre at Shangla, construction of building for deaf and dumb school at Takhtbhai, Mardan.
Apart from, they said, the KP government would also construct building for special children education in district Haripur as well as establish zakat and usher offices at Hayatabad. Coming into power in KP with a famous slogan 'Change' the provincial government has planned to build Tabdeeli Centre (Change Centre) at Hayatabd, Peshawar. "Likewise, the provincial government would also provide laptops to students of blind schools of Social Welfare and Women Empowerment department in the financial year 2015-16," the officials said. Capacity building of the vulnerable groups by imparting skills to make them contributory members of the society while earning livelihood for themselves, is also part of the present government agenda. Moreover, they said, work on eradicating drug menace and medico-legal protection of women, children and old age prisoners would also be ensured by the provincial government in the province.
